The winning consortium hired inter alia Wapo Services, Raed Focus Security Systems, and Pyralis Services to work on the modernization of the Military Unit in Câmpia Turzii, a project worth more than one billion lei, reports Ziarul Financiar. These companies, with turnovers in the 1-43 mn. lei range, are handling one of Romania’s largest public projects.
The Ministry of National Defence last year launched a tender for a project carrying over 1.3 bn. lei to expand and upgrade Air Base 71 in Campia Turzii. The final aim of the project is to accommodate the storage, maintenance and usage of multi-role combat aircraft, and to diversify the missions and drills that involve domestic or international forces”. The tender covering the first phase of the project, worth 514 mn. lei (infrastructure and operational area in Barracks 1833 in Câmpia Turzii) was won by a joint venture of Telekom Romania Communications SA, Ubitech Construcții SRL, Petrodesign SA and Leviatan Design SRL, which is the leading contractor of this consortium.
One of the subcontractors is the British-owned Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure, which has extensive experience in infrastructure and logistics projects of the British Royal Air Force and NASA.
Leviatan Design is one of this year’s Top 10 architecture and design firms in Romania. With a team of almost 90 specialists (architects, designers and support staff), and based on on-going investments, the company has managed to increase its performance and timely deliver complex projects covering various areas, in 75% of Romania’s counties. The company stands out among its national peers through its ability to adapt to change, while being strongly supported by the digitization and technologization of the internal processes and the application of the BIM (Building Information Modelling) standard.
The plan is to build new infrastructure and new buildings in Câmpia Turzii, mainly hangars and workshops, administrative buildings and ancillary buildings that will enable this operational area to work in optimal conditions, while integrating and developing other functions necessary in Air Base 71 of Câmpia Turzii, supporting the Romanian Air Force and its strategic partners.
The project should be ready in 2024.
The Air Base in Câmpia Turzii is one of the key strategic points in Romania’s defence and security infrastructure. Even Romania’s allies look at it that way. The US Air Force announced in May that the United States would invest $152 mn. in 15 infrastructure upgrades on the Air Base in Câmpia Turzii.
The first works started in May-August 2021. The US Air Force plans to spend $130 mn. this year on “optimisations” of the Romanian air base. This amount is reflected in this year’s budget of the Department of Defence and represents USA’s largest military investment in Europe in 2021.
